Sexual Health Infection (STI) screening
Sexual Health Infection (STI) screening includes an examination of the genitals, mouth and rectum, checking for signs of STIs.
- A urine test in males and very occasionally a swab from the penis if indicated and a throat and rectal swab in men who have sex with men (MSM) are performed. These check for Chlamydia and gonorrhoea.
- In women, a cervical swab is performed for Chlamydia and gonorrhoea if symptomatic but occasionally women may opt to self swab the vagina for these bacterial infections if she has no symptoms
- Where indicated, on-site microscopy is performed on penile, vaginal or rectal secretions and the result is available within 10 minutes.
- Routine bloods drawn include tests for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B. A point of care ‘rapid’ HIV test is performed and the results are available in 10 minutes. Results of all ‘rapid’ HIV tests, reactive or negative are always confirmed in the laboratory. Occasionally a blood for hepatitis C or Herpes simplex is taken.
Cost of a full STI Screen
The cost of a full STI screen is €120. This is inclusive of all tests including the point of care HIV test and microscopy. In the event that genital wart removal is necessary, the cost is €150.00. Minor surgery costs are discussed in advance of any procedure.
